Loudoun County, Virginia

Loudon County is an affluent county located in Northern Virginia. With a population estimated to be 347,969, Loudon County is the third most popular county in Virginia. It is 521 square miles in area, six of which are in water.

Loudon County was established in 1757 out of territory from Fairfax County. It is named for John Campbell, Fourth Earl of Loudon and Governor of Virginia from 1756-1759. In 1962, Loudon County became the home of Washington Dulles International Airport, and ever since then it has experienced rapid growth. Its economy has grown dramatically since the 1980s, and its suburbs expanded widely in the 1990s due to a high-tech boom.

Loudon County is headquarters for Internet and high-tech companies like Verizon Business, Telos Corporation, Orbital Sciences Corporation, and Paxfire. Loudon County still has a strong rural economy in the western part of the County and is a top producer of wheat. Other major employers in Loudon County include its public schools system, the county itself, M.C. Dean, Inc., Verizon Business, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Orbital Sciences Corporation, United Airlines, AOL, Loudon Hospital Center, and the United States Postal Service. The equine industry has a major presence in Loudon County, with an estimated revenue of about $78 million. The County has an expanding wine industry, with 22 wineries and more than 25 active firms that have produced several internationally-recognized wines. It is a top wheat-producing county as well, and was known as the Bread Basket of the American Revolution due to its rich agriculture.

Loudon County has a vigorous human rights policy, which it adopted in July 1988 and revised in September 23, 2013. It prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, age, sex, disability, marital status, political affiliation, ability to pay, or sexual orientation. Also related to the employment context, it asserts residents’ rights to be paid for work performed for the direct benefit of or value to the program, consistent with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and to an impartial review of reviews of rights under the law and access to legal counsel. Residents of Loudon County can pursue claims of human rights violations through its Regional Human Rights Committee, the Virginia Council on Human Rights, or with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
